About Holiday Caravans Direct
Holiday Caravans Direct was a UK-based marketplace platform enabling private owners of luxury static caravans and lodges to list their properties for holidaymakers to rent across a selection of holiday parks around the UK. Founded in 2013, the company provided a dedicated space connecting caravan owners with families and groups looking for a quality self-catering holiday experience. The business has since grown significantly and rebranded as Newmans Holiday Homes in 2025, now managing 275 private hire luxury holiday caravans.

The Challenge

Holiday Caravans Direct had developed a complex new website that needed to serve two distinct types of user: private caravan owners registering and listing their properties, and holidaymakers searching, selecting, and booking their ideal stay. The platform incorporated a wide range of features including user registration, caravan listings, availability management, an online booking flow, card payment processing, booking modifications, and cancellations.

With the busy holiday season approaching, Holiday Caravans Direct wanted to launch in good time, even if initially with a small selection of listed caravans. The team recognised the complexity of what had been built and engaged WebDepend to ensure the platform had been tested thoroughly before going live. Their primary concern was that the core workflows - listing a caravan, booking a stay, and processing payments and invoices - were fully functional and reliable.

Our Testing Approach

WebDepend carried out a programme of functional exploratory testing across multiple phases from July to November 2019, evaluating each release as the development team addressed issues and made improvements. Testing centred on the platform’s primary user flows, covering:

  • Owner registration and caravan listing
  • Holidaymaker registration and account management
  • Caravan search and availability browsing
  • End-to-end booking flow, including payment processing and card storage
  • Booking modifications and cancellations
  • Invoice generation and payment handling

Usability was evaluated throughout, with a particular focus on how straightforward the registration and booking processes were for each type of user. Compatibility testing was also conducted across the major desktop browsers on both Windows and macOS, and across mobile devices running iOS and Android. Accessibility testing was not within the scope of this engagement.

Key Findings

Testing revealed a significant number of issues across both core user journeys, spanning functional issues, critical bugs, and usability problems:

  • Registration flow problems: multiple issues were identified with the sign-up process for both owners and holidaymakers, which would have prevented users from completing registration successfully.
  • Booking flow issues: bugs were found across the booking journey, including problems saving card details for future use, and issues with modifying and cancelling bookings.
  • Critical cancellation bug: a severe bug was discovered whereby cancelling a single booking inadvertently cancelled all bookings associated with that caravan - a potentially damaging issue for both owners and holidaymakers had it reached production.
  • Critical booking bug: critical errors were encountered when attempting to make bookings at specific caravans that had been configured for testing.
  • Registration usability problems: it was not clear to users which form fields were required during registration, and validation messages were insufficient, leading to a confusing and friction-heavy sign-up experience.
  • Booking confirmation usability issues: the point of booking confirmation was unclear, with users unsure which action would actually complete their booking.

The breadth of issues found during early testing made it clear to the Holiday Caravans Direct team that a more structured, phased approach to the build and launch would be needed, with ongoing testing supporting each release cycle.

Outcomes & Benefits

WebDepend’s involvement with Holiday Caravans Direct had a tangible impact on both the quality of the platform and the way the project was managed through to launch. The initial round of testing revealed the true scope of work remaining, giving the business a much more realistic picture of the effort needed and enabling a more appropriate launch date to be set.

As bugs from each phase were resolved, WebDepend continued to assess each new release, building a structured and iterative testing process that improved the development workflow throughout the project. WebDepend also provided supporting guidance and recommendations alongside bug reports, helping the team understand not just what was broken but how best to address it.

The site ultimately launched successfully, with the Holiday Caravans Direct team expressing strong satisfaction with WebDepend’s ability to assess the platform comprehensively, identify critical issues early, and provide clear, actionable feedback throughout the engagement.
